New to the idea

Hello. We are a professional couple about to be empty nesters in our late 40s with limited boating experience, but thinking hard and long about the LA life in/around Tampa for mostly Marina life with occasional cruising along the Gulf coast to the keys. We are looking for 40-50’ range powerboat (we think) but want to learn as much as possible through everyone’s experiences.

Welcome to the community. You might want to consider the Power Squadron courses that are often available at little or no cost at local community or adult education centers. These courses are presented at several levels and include piloting, seamanship and navigation. I find the Salt Creek area in St. Pete an interesting area for browsing the local market. You'll find wonderful cruising and live aboard opportunities on the Gulf Coast.
Take care and joy, Aythya crew

Captain Force is right. The Gulf Coast of FL is full of great cruising and Live-aboard opportunities. Check out St Pete City Marina, several places up the Manatee River, Longboat Key Club Moorings and Marina Jack in Sarasota. All have on site brokers, boats for sale, and live-aboard facilities. Maybe hire a buyer’s broker to get you aboard lots of examples.

A great place to start is Yachtworld.com “Advanced Search” feature. There, you can select your area, length of boat, power or sail, budget range, diesel or gas, and much more to narrow your search. What range of budget are you working with?
